I had always known that the fragrance Gendarme was popular, but what I didn’t know was just how popular. According to Jonathan Risco, president of Gendarme fragrances, this men’s cologne has been the number one selling fragrance in Barney’s New York for the last 18 years, that’s just one store.
So I decided to do a little digging to find out just how this one scent has captivated so many people, like celebrities, such as Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman, L L Cool J and Bill Clinton, also female celebrities like Janet Jackson, Sharon Stone and Brooke Shields, just to name a few.
Back in 1983, Topper Schroeder, the creator of Gendarme was looking for a fragrance that he could wear with pride, that did not irritate the skin or cause asthmatic reactions. After searching department stores everywhere with no success, Topper decided that he would create his own fragrance for his own personal use, after wearing it everywhere, it basically, by accident, became a very respected, popular and very much loved men’s cologne.
Risco exclaims “over the years Gendarme has changed the way people think about fragrance. It’s the fragrance you want to wear if you want to be kissed. You know the worst thing that’s ever been said about the fragrance? It’s that is smells clean.” I have not personally had the privilege of smelling this fragrance, however, it is definitely on my to do asap list.
How many times have you seen an actor, or just thought about one, that a women’s perfume or men’s cologne come to your mind? I have to admit that I have never thought of that, until now. However, since reading about this new fragrance by Peter Andre and what he has to say about it, I may have to change the way I look at things.
Peter Andre, singer for the group Behind Closed Doors believes that his recently launched men’s cologne called Conditional reflects the image of George Clooney. Andre said “if you can imagine George Clooney walking down the red carpet and how he would smell. That’s how I try to imagine this smells.”
So all you women out their who really like George Clooney, I suggest that you go and buy the cologne for your man, then you can simply close your eyes and pretend your with George. Who knows maybe now I will start putting famous faces to famous scents, or, not so much. Anyway, I am a little intrigued, and will go out and purchase a bottle, if only out of curiosity.
I have always been a person who loves perfumes, colognes and lotions etc. Anything that can leave me feeling and smelling fresh and clean. I can remember as a teenager (back in the late 70’s) my brother had a girlfriend that used to wear his cologne all the time, when I asked her why she told me that she loves the smell and that it didn’t smell the same on her as it did on him. Which I found to be quite true.
2010, I’m curious and searching for unisex fragrances and find that times sure have changed, the list is very long, from Jean Paul Gaultier to Bulgari to Calvin Klein, now I love men’s cologne but not so much that I want to wear it. So I do my search to find the best unisex fragrance there is. So far CK One has my vote.
CK One’s fragrance notes include, bergamot, cardamom, fresh pineapple, papaya, jasmine, violet, rose, nutmeg and musk and it has a light, citrus fragrance that doesn’t overwhelm. Calvin Klein has also relaunched their CK One in a new limited edition bottle with an attached MP3 player. Now if that isn’t just the coolest thing yet. The limited edition bottle is available exclusively at Macy’s.
Who would have guessed that wild cats like men’s cologne? Not me, that’s for sure, apparently in order to stimulate the animals curiosity, zookeepers spray cologne and perfume on trees and rocks. Pat Thomas, the general curator for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo in New York, tested which fragrance that cheetahs responded to most positively. Using 2 cheetahs and 24 fragrances, he recorded how long it would take them to notice, and how long they interacted with it. Obsession won at 11.1 minutes, 2nd place was Nina Ricci’s L’Air du Temps at 10.4 minutes and Estee Lauder’s Beautiful, held their attention for a whopping 2 seconds.
In 2007 a study was done in Guatemala using jaguar’s with Obsession on a rag and the rag covering the camera, 3 times as many walked up to the camera. Ann Gottlieb, who helped create the men’s cologne, Obsession, told The Wall Street Journal “it sparks curiosity with humans, and, apparently, animals.”
So now we know how the phrase “animal attraction” came to be.
I am a huge fan of Bruce Willis, as a matter of fact I have seen Die Hard so many times I can’t count, so when I heard Bruce was going to release his own fragrance I have to admit I was taken back a little. But then, why not? Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Gerard Butler just to name a few did. Bruce is just the latest in a long line of celebrities to have their own scent.
Bruce Willis has signed a deal with German Company LR Health & Beauty Systems to create a men’s cologne which is due out in July. The chief operating officer of the firm states that “The Bruce Willis scent will be extremely masculine and-starting from ingredients through to design-embodies every individual feature of the Hollywood star: strong, self confident, consistent.”
This is one fragrance that I’m really looking forward to. However, one celebrity that will not release his own scent is John Mayer, he says it would smell like sausage and sleep, if you can imagine that.
Guerlain is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world. In 1965 they launched their original Habit Rouge men’s cologne. However, the fragrance was so appealing to both men and women that women wear it also.
With a more transparent bottle and the same fresh oriental scent, Guerlain has launched their newest version of Habit Rouge sport version “Gentleman Driver”. This new version of men’s cologne was released in mid March. I wonder if the women will love this new fragrance so much that they wear it also.
Move over Old Spice, it’s time to make room for other products. For years men wore deodorant, aftershave and cologne, well times are changing and so are our men.
During the 2010 Super Bowl, Unilever, the makers of Dove, premiered it’s Dove Men + Care product line. Unilever is focusing on creating comfortable skin for men which includes body wash and a body bar. Axe, also manufactured by Unilever, promotes body wash, deodorant, body spray and hair products.
Gillette, a Proctor & Gamble brand has offered shaving products for years but is now increased their line to also include hair care and body wash. Burts Bees which is owned by Clorox also has a line for men that include all natural men’s cologne, soaps, shaving products and moisturizers.
However, don’t count Old Spice out of the picture because they have also jumped at the opportunity, to include body washes as well as their original product line.
How many times have you been around certain men and almost fell in love with them because of their cologne? To me, there is nothing better then a great smelling cologne. My husband only wears Drakkar, which I do love, but there are so many other men’s cologne that I wish he would at least try.
I have spoke to several of my friends and family members and have come up with a few of our favorite, best smelling men’s cologne. Acqua Di Gio by Georgio Armani, Chrome by Azarro, Cool Water by Davidoff and Hugo by Hugo Boss. I have to admit that these are my favorites, in that order. Maybe someday I will be able to talk my husband into at least trying one of them.
Have you ever tried picking out a new cologne for your husband or boy friend? Wow, there is such a large variety and the prices, you can’t count on the price being a cologne that he will love or even like, price means very little in your final decision. I know this because I bought my husband a new cologne that he hated. So I have opted to have a trusted friend go with me when I shop for his cologne.
When you first go in the department store head straight for the men’s cologne, spray lightly on your friend, or in my case, my daughter, then go shopping for 30-40 minutes. This will give the top notes, the scent perceived upon application, to evaporate and this will happen rather quickly. Then there is the scent of the cologne which is called the middle notes that when combined with the base notes, which appear as the middle notes evaporate, form the main theme of the cologne. This process takes about 30 minutes and hopefully after shopping for 1/2 hour you will decide that you like the scent and don’t have to start all over again, as in my case. Needless to say we planned a whole day of shopping which was a very good thing.
According to Vogue, the legendary filmmaker, Martin Scorsese is shooting campaigns for Chanel’s signature women’s perfume Chanel No. 5. How many people have not heard of Martin Scorsese? With films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and winning the academy award for best director in The Departed. He is certainly a busy man, one would think. Rumor has it Chanel wants him to direct a commercial for them.
Chanel did confirm the rumors that Martin has directed a series of commercials for a certain men’s cologne (the fragrance remains a mystery) that will air in September. I would say that Chanel has brought a highly acclaimed man on board, one that Chanel says is a privilege that they have been seeking for quite sometime.
